Not all bed, breakfast, and corrals are created equal. Some stand alone, unequaled in architecture, hospitality, and comfort. The magnificent Chief Joseph Ranch in the Bitterroot Valley near Darby, Montana (406/821-0894; www.chiefjosephranch.com), is one such example. Once a dude ranch and then closed to the public for many years, the historic ranch is now open again for all to enjoy.

And guess where we ate dinner? Yep, in the all-glass Sunset Dining Room. Unlike most bed & breakfasts, Chief Joseph includes a delicious dinner as part of its package. While our eyes feasted on a brilliant scarlet-streaked sky, we slowly worked our way through a scrumptious pork chop dinner.
We rode our horses up the south shore of the lake. I had my 5-year-old Missouri Fox Trotter, Buddy, and Charlene was riding her 7-year-old Fox Trotter, Scout. Buddy and Scout made good time going along the south shoreline. We had lovely views of the shining water and high Como Peaks.

Location: New MexicoPrice: $18.5 millionProperty size: 5,238 acresActor Val Kilmer once operated the 7 bedroom, 8.5 bath Pecos River Ranch as a bed and breakfast. True to the name, it has six miles of frontage on the Pecos River. The year 2009 brought some tax troubles for Kilmer, when $538,858 in unpaid back taxes resulted in a lein on the property. The ranch went on the market that same year, and it finally sold in early 2011, at a drastic reduction from the original $33 million asking price. The Zillow.com blog noted that Kilmer has a reputation as a difficult neighbor, after he complained about them in several magazine interviews.
As we lope through the empty field below our cabin retracing and expanding on the route I see the horses take each morning, I am nothing more than a smile with legs. Dudley seems to love this too. His strides elongate, his head and tail held high, and I lean forward as we race across the earth subtly encouraging his spiritedness. We are joy manifested in movement, sunshine on our skin with nothing but space and sky ahead of us.
Every sunrise and sunset the horses run to and from the stables, the sound of their hooves like chapters in my mind demarcating the story of our weekend. On our last day, I smile when I watch them because I, too have galloped that route, hair streaming wild in the wind. As we drive down the dusty gravel road back to reality I replace the home screen of my phone and computer with images from our trip; small reminders of unbroken landscapes, the first string beans of the season, soft sheets, and the sound of running wholeheartedly towards whatever work the day brings.
The all-inclusive ranch package includes snacks and meals, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Guests receive cooked to order breakfasts, with lunch and dinner plated and served cafeteria style. Our weather was wonderful during the June visit, allowing guests to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner outside on the deck with a view of the horse pasture.
